Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This directive mandates a safety check for specific Falcon business jets to prevent fire suppression system failures. It requires aircraft operators to follow the manufacturer's Service Bulletin No. 657 when replacing or inspecting fire extinguisher squibs (small explosive charges that trigger fire extinguishers).

Who it affects: Owners and operators of AMD Fan Jet Falcon, Falcon 20, and Mystere-Falcon 200 series aircraft (all models).

Why it matters: A design change meant newer squibs no longer require a spacer washer. However, a safety incident revealed that if mechanics mistakenly install the old spacer with the new squib design, the fire bottle won't activate during an emergency. This rule prevents that potentially fatal error by ensuring mechanics follow the correct installation procedure.

AD/AMD 20/17 Fire Extinguisher Bottle Squib 2/80

Applicability: All models.

Requirement: Action in accordance with AMD SB No. 657.

Note: Bureau Veritas AD 79-218-(B) refers.

Compliance: Within 100 hours time in service after 29 February 1980.

Background: Following the addition of a spacer washer to the fire extinguisher squib as required by AD/AMD-20/13, AMD developed a modified squib which does NOT require a spacer washer. An incident has now been reported whereby a modified squib was fitted with a spacer, resulting in the squib failing to activate the extinguisher bottle. Reference should be made to AMD SB No. 657 whenever subsequent squib replacement is carried out.
