What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) identified as AD/ALF/21 dated 6/2009. Mechanically, it imposes mandatory inspection and replacement requirements on specific high pressure compressor (HPC) first stage discs fitted to Honeywell International Inc. ALF502L-2 and ALF502L-2C turbofan engines (Applicability). The AD applies to discs having part numbers 2-101-331-03, 2-101-331-04 and 2-101-331-10 installed; the engines are fitted on, but not limited to, Bombardier CL-600-1A11 aeroplanes (Applicability). The AD became effective on 4 June 2009 (Effective date).
The operative requirements are threefold (Requirement). First, for any disc that has 5,000 or more cycles‑since‑new on the effective date of the AD, a dimensional inspection of the disc must be performed to determine whether excessive balance material has been removed. The AD expressly refers to “Figure 1” for the quantitative limits on removed balance material. Second, if the dimensional inspection shows excessive removed balance material within those Figure 1 limits, the disc must be replaced. Third, if the dimensional condition is acceptable under the Figure 1 limits, the disc must still undergo a magnetic particle inspection (MPI) of the disc rim and slots for cracks, using a 3 to 7 power magnification glass; the AD cites the Engine Overhaul Manual, 72‑34‑11, Inspection/Check, as containing the MPI procedure. Any disc showing cracks on MPI must be replaced (Requirement).
The AD sets a single compliance window: the required actions must be completed at the next shop visit but not later than 2,500 cycles‑in‑service after the effective date of this AD, unless the actions have already been done (Compliance). The stated rationale in the AD’s Background is that reports of discs with excessive material removed from balancing locations have been received, and the AD is intended to prevent discs fracturing before reaching their published life limit; a disc fracture could lead to an uncontained failure with aeroplane damage (Background).
