What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (the Directive) updates mandatory maintenance requirements for a subset of Rolls‑Royce Corporation (RRC) Allison 250‑series turboshaft engines by continuing and refining an electrical inspection regime for the hydromechanical unit (HMU) Power Lever Angle (PLA) potentiometer and by imposing a mandatory terminating modification once a redesigned HMU is available.
Mechanically, the Directive does three things (under the heading Requirement in the source):
- It requires operators to "perform an electrical signal inspection of the HMU Power Lever Angle (PLA) potentiometer in accordance with paragraphs 2.B. through 2.B.(8) and 2.B.(10) of the Accomplishment Instructions of ACEB CEB A‑73‑3103, Revision 4, or CEB A‑73‑6030, Revision 4" (Requirement 1).
- It requires immediate replacement of the HMU "if the electrical signal result is found to be unacceptable during the Requirement 1 inspection" (Requirement 2).
- It requires replacement of the existing HMU with a redesigned HMU incorporating a dual‑element potentiometer "that has a P/N that is not listed in paragraph 1.A. Group A of ACEB CEB A‑73‑3103, Revision 4 and CEB A‑73‑6030, Revision 4"; such replacement is a mandatory terminating action to the repetitive inspection requirement (Requirement 3).
The Directive specifies applicability to RRC models 250‑C30R/3, ‑C30R/3M, ‑C47B and ‑C47M engines that have an HMU with a part number listed in paragraph 1.A Group A of the two cited ACEBs (Applicability). The Directive supersedes a prior AD (AD/AL 250/82) and continues the inspection regime under revised ACEBs, adding the mandatory replacing action once a redesigned HMU is available (Background). It sets firm compliance windows: initial and repetitive inspection intervals (300 hours time in service (TIS)), an immediate "before further flight" replacement obligation upon an unacceptable inspection result, and a replacement deadline within 600 hours TIS or by a fixed calendar date (Compliance). The Directive was signed by a CASA delegate, James Coyne, on 23 December 2004, notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 26 January 2005, and becomes effective on 17 February 2005 (signature, Gazette and effective date).
