What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) labelled AD/AC-CLA/6 Amdt 1 and applies to CALL AIR A-9 series aeroplanes with a particular configuration. Mechanically, it mandates periodic inspection and remedial action for the wing struts carry-through tube when that tube passes through the hopper. The document specifies where the carry-through tube is located for inspection (625 mm aft of the hopper forward bulkhead and 150 mm below the hopper surface), the inspection steps, the threshold criteria that trigger mandatory replacement, and the material and finishing requirements if repair rather than replacement is appropriate. The operative steps set out are: remove the hopper top and visually inspect the fibreglass wrapping for cracks; if cracking is present, remove the wrapping and inspect the tube for corrosion; remove any corrosion found; if corrosion exceeds either a maximum depth of 0.25 mm at any one location or an area equal to 2 per cent of the tube cross-sectional area, the tube must be replaced. The AD gives the nominal cross-sectional area of the tube as 262.5 square millimetres, and requires finishing with two coats of zinc chromate primer after corrosion removal and rewrapping with a fibreglass laminate using a minimum of three layers of MIL-C-9084 glass cloth (or local equivalent) with a chemical resistant resin such as Reichhold 33-402 (local equivalents may be substituted). The compliance interval specified in the AD is at three-yearly intervals after 12 December 1978. The amendment becomes effective 25 September 2008 and is signed by a Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (David Villiers, dated 7 August 2008). The AD also includes a note referencing FAA AD 78-20-06. The Background records that the original AD arose in 1979 following reports of severe corrosion of this tube in a number of overseas aeroplanes, including an instance that caused a fatal accident.
