What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/AC-112/17), issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and signed 11 August 2008, prescribes inspection and mandatory replacement work for hinge halves on ailerons and elevator trim tabs on specified Gulfstream (Rockwell) Model 112 aeroplanes. The instrument applies to Model 112 aircraft, serial numbers 3 through 120 (Applicability). It requires an underside inspection to identify whether hinge halves are the formed type, produced by rolling the edge of a 0.040 inch thick flat sheet, or the extruded type that is 0.060 inch thick (Requirement (a)). If all hinge halves in the inspected locations are the extruded type, the AD requires no further action (Requirement (b)). If any formed hinge piece is found, the Directive mandates replacement of the complete hinge before further flight with the specified Rockwell Commander parts: Part No. 42251-1 for the aileron hinges and Part No. 44020-5 for the elevator trim tab hinges (Requirement (c)). The AD permits the aircraft to be ferried to a base for the replacement only if no cracks are visually evident in any formed hinges (Requirement (c), final sentence). The AD cites FAA AD 73-24-01 Amdt 39-1743 and Rockwell International Service Bulletin No. SB-112-6 (original issue, or later FAA approved revision) as reference documents (Note). The compliance window is “unless already accomplished, before 30 September 2008,” and the Directive becomes effective on 25 September 2008 (Compliance; effective date). The Background statement specifies the purpose as ensuring compliance of future imported aircraft. The document is a prescriptive, time-limited safety requirement: it identifies affected aircraft by model and serial number, mandates a defined inspection technique, prescribes compulsory replacement with particular part numbers when a condition is found, allows a limited ferry permission where no cracks exist, and references external technical materials for further detail.
