What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) directed at Airbus A330 aeroplanes that have had a particular rudder fly-by-wire modification embodied in production (Airbus Modification 49144), and that have not been altered by a subsequent modification (Airbus Modification 55185) nor had Airbus Service Bulletin A330-27-3142 embodied while in service (Applicability). Mechanically, the AD requires three things.
- A repetitive built-in-test-equipment (BITE) operational test of the back-up control module (BCM) and its back-up power supply (BPS), performed in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin (SB) A330-27-3147 dated 4 August 2006 (Requirement 1).
- If that operational test reveals any discrepancies, application of corrective actions specified in SB A330-27-3147 before further flight (Requirement 2).
- Installation of a modified BCM in accordance with SB A330-27-3142 (Requirement 3).
The AD accepts later approved revisions of the referenced service bulletins as alternative means of compliance (later approved revisions may be utilised to achieve compliance). Timing and phasing are explicit: the BITE test is to be performed within 900 hours time in service after the AD becomes effective, and then at intervals not exceeding 900 hours until the BCM is replaced in accordance with SB A330-27-3142 (Compliance for Requirement 1). Any corrective action triggered by the test must be completed before further flight (Compliance for Requirement 2). The terminating action, installation of the modified BCM, must be accomplished no later than 31 December 2008 (Compliance for Requirement 3). The AD’s effective date is 21 December 2006; it was issued under the authority of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, signed by James Coyne, Delegate, on 9 November 2006.
