What it does
This Airworthiness Directive amendment (AD/A330/60 Amdt 1, dated 3/2008) requires affected Airbus A330 aircraft to be modified in accordance with a referenced European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) airworthiness directive, EASA AD 2008-0002. The Australian instrument adopts the EASA-mandated corrective action for the wing shroud box bottom panel, by directing "Action in accordance with the requirements of EASA AD 2008-0002" (Requirement). The AD explicitly references AIRBUS Service Bulletin A330-57-3100, original issue or a later EASA approved revision, as the implementation document (Note). The amendment becomes effective on 13 March 2008 (Requirement).
Mechanically, the amendment replaces, for affected machines, a blind-riveted metallic shroud box bottom panel design with a bolted shroud box bottom panel design. The background statement explains why: reports of a wing shroud box bottom panel missing during routine inspection and of a panel detaching during take-off were traced to blind rivets working loose, fatigue damage and crack propagation through the fastener line, leading to detachment and consequent structural damage. The amendment notes that, since the original issue of the Directive, three additional panel-loss events were reported on aircraft already inspected under the original AD, and that Amendment 1 responds to a new EASA AD which "mandates the installation of a bolted shroud box bottom panel instead of blind riveted metallic design" (Background).
The instrument identifies applicability precisely. It applies to "All Model A330-200 and -300 aircraft, all serial numbers, with AIRBUS modification 46077 incorporated in production; except aircraft with AIRBUS modification 55568 incorporated in production or AIRBUS Service Bulletin A330-57-3100 incorporated in service" (Applicability). The AD is signed by the Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 30 January 2008 (signature block). In short, the AD converts the EASA prescriptive fix (bolted panel) into a mandatory action for specified Australian-registered A330s, while excluding aircraft already incorporating an alternative modification or the service bulletin.
