What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/A330/50, dated 5/2005, effective 12 May 2005) mandates inspections and corrective action for Airbus A330-300 aeroplanes fitted with a specific carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) rudder, part number (P/N) A55471500, and for any such rudder held as a spare. The instrument requires operators to carry out the inspections and any necessary repairs in accordance with Airbus All Operator Telex (AOT) A330-55A3035, specifically paragraphs 4.2.1 to 4.2.3. The AD sets a compliance window of within 850 flight hours or three months from the effective date, whichever occurs first. It also accepts, as an alternative means of compliance, any of the inspections in AOT section 4.2.2 that were performed in the 18 months prior to the AD’s effective date, provided those inspection results are reported to Airbus. All inspection results are to be reported to Airbus within ten days of completion of the inspections, using Reporting Sheet TD 943.0273/05 Issue A, dated 16 March 2005. Where findings occur in the rudder side panels, or where damage to the rudder attachment exceeds the Structure Repair Manual (SRM) limits, the AD requires referral to Airbus Structure Engineering Customer Support for an approved repair solution before further flight. The AD states that DGAC EAD UF-2005-053 is referred to, and it records the background incident motivating the directive: an A310 suffered physical loss of the majority of its rudder in flight, with ongoing investigation into cause and sequence; the AD draws a risk link because the same CFRP rudder P/N fitted to the A310 is also fitted on certain A330-300 production aircraft (specific MSNs listed).
