What it does
Mechanically, this instrument is an Airworthiness Directive that imposes a mandatory modification on specific nose landing gear Hydraulic Control Blocks (HCB) installed on Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 aeroplanes. The Directive identifies two affected HCB part numbers, PN C24856000-9 and PN C24856001-7, and requires that they be modified in accordance with the instructions in AIRBUS Service Bulletin A330-32-3156. The tableed text sets out the concrete compliance window: the modification must be completed "Not later than 30 September 2007" and the Directive became effective on "17 March 2005." The Requirement block also records the immediate mechanical outcome of the mandated modification: after completion, HCB PN C24856000-9 will be redesignated PN C24856000-11, and HCB PN C24856001-7 will be redesignated PN C24856001-9.
Technically, the modification consists of installing a check valve between the selector valve and the servo valve inside the HCB. The stated design effect of that check valve is to "limit the back pressure generated from torque applied to the gear due to ground movements in a free castor situation" and thereby allow a nominal functioning of the bypass valve, preventing a transient "hydraulic lock" that had been observed in at least one event.
The Directive applies to all serial numbers of AIRBUS A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft except those on which AIRBUS modification 50650 has been embodied in production or AIRBUS Service Bulletin A330-32-3156 has already been embodied in service. The document records an origin in a specific operational incident: a sudden veering during take-off roll at 47 kts that proceeded, in the flight-data analysis, with a "Braking and Steering Control Unit (BSCU) Channel 1 Fault" and a consequent loss of Nose Wheel Steering (NWS), with a brief hydraulic lock in the HCB preventing transfer from steering to castoring and return to straight ahead.
