What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) addressed to Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 aeroplanes that may be fitted with a specific main landing gear (MLG) retraction actuator lower pin, referred to as a P-Pin. Mechanically, it mandates inspections of the P-Pin for correct manufacture (the position of grease holes), reporting of inspection results to the part manufacturer, and removal and replacement of P-Pins that are fractured or incorrectly manufactured. It also prescribes interim inspection procedures (external visual checks for migration) when an incorrectly manufactured P-Pin has been detected and not yet replaced.
Key operative elements in the text are:
- Applicability: the AD applies to "AIRBUS A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft equipped with main landing gear (MLG) retraction actuator lower pin(s) (P-Pin) part number (PN) 201275602," with a carve-out that no action is required for aircraft on which AirBus modification 46903 (install PN 201478612) in production or Airbus Service Bulletin A330-32-3096 in service has been embodied.
- Requirements: four grouped actions (labelled Requirement 1-4). These are: (1) visual inspection of P-Pins PN 201275602 in accordance with Airbus AOT A330-32A3181 and reporting the results to Messier-Dowty using the VSB pro-forma referenced in the AOT; (2) replacement of any fractured P-Pin; (3) where grease hole positions are incorrect, immediate replacement, and pending replacement specified daily external inspections to detect pin migration (with replacement if migration is found); and (4) examination of any P-Pin PN 201275602 used as a replacement part for correct grease hole positions before fitment.
- Compliance timing: the AD sets short compliance windows. For Requirement 1, inspections for fitted P-Pins were to be accomplished "within 100 Flight Cycles or 3 months from 16 June 2004 (the effective date of the original issue of this AD), whichever occurs first"; spares were to be inspected "before fitment to the aeroplane." Other actions have “before further flight” or specified intervals (for example, replace incorrect pins within 800 flight hours after the visual inspection per Requirement 1).
