What it does
This Australian Airworthiness Directive (AD/A330/30 Amdt 4) mandates a sequence of mandatory inspections and replacements for specific trim tank vent float valves (TTVFVs) on Airbus A330 series aeroplanes. The directive arises from damage found on these valves, where detachment of internal parts may cause sparks, increased static load, or structural damage, and in concert with other failures could lead to a catastrophic event. The operative requirements are fourfold. First, operators must perform a detailed visual borescope inspection of the left‑hand (LH) and right‑hand (RH) trim tank vent float valves following two Airbus Service Bulletins (SB A330‑28‑3086 Rev 1 and SB A330‑28‑3087 Rev 1), or later DGAC‑approved revisions. Second, any defects found during those inspections must be rectified using the same service bulletins. Third, the TTVFVs must be replaced with new units: for the RH valve (Argo‑Tech PN 61600) replacement must be with the same PN or with a new PN valve under SB A330‑28‑3088 Rev 1; for the LH valve (Intertechnique PN L87‑13‑001) replacement must be with a new unit of the same PN or a new PN valve under SB A330‑28‑3089 Rev 2 or SB A330‑28‑3094. Fourth, where a valve is replaced with the original part numbers (PN 61600 or PN L87‑13‑001), a further repetitive borescope inspection is required. The directive provides a terminating action: replacing the RH valve in accordance with SB A330‑28‑3088 Rev 1 and the LH valve in accordance with SB A330‑28‑3089 Rev 2 or SB A330‑28‑3094 cancels all prior requirements. Once terminating action is accomplished, all old valves removed from aircraft must be discarded. The directive also addresses interchangeability: the new part numbers for the A330 (Argo‑Tech PN 62015‑1; Intertechnique PN L87‑13‑002 or PN L87‑13‑003) are not interchangeable with the same part numbers when installed on the A340. Compliance times are expressed in flight hours and flight cycles, with specific triggers for aircraft where the valve has never been replaced versus those where it has been replaced in service. The amendment became effective on 24 November 2005.
