What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/A330/108) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on 2 September 2009, effective 7 September 2009, imposes mandatory actions on operators of specified Airbus A330 series aeroplanes fitted with Thales Avionics pitot probes. The directive has two main mechanical requirements. First, within four months of the effective date, any aeroplane with a Thales part number C16195AA pitot probe installed at any position must replace that probe in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin A330-34-3206 Revision 01 dated 12 November 2008 or Airbus Service Bulletin A330-34-3231 dated 12 August 2009, as applicable to the aeroplane model. Second, for aeroplanes with Thales C16195BA pitot probes installed at positions 1 (Captain) and 3 (Stand by), those probes must be removed from those positions and replaced with Goodrich P/N 0851HL pitot probes, again following SB A330-34-3231. After compliance, the required configuration is a Thales C16195BA at position 2 (First Officer) and Goodrich 0851HL probes at positions 1 and 3. Operators may also choose an alternative method: replacing all three positions with Goodrich 0851HL probes using Airbus approved data. In addition, after 7 January 2010, the directive prohibits installation of Thales C16195AA probes at any position and Thales C16195BA probes at positions 1 or 3. The directive is explicitly described as a precautionary measure. The background notes that airspeed discrepancies reported on A330/340 aircraft at high altitudes in inclement weather have been linked to Thales probes, and that the Goodrich probe has demonstrated greater robustness against high-altitude ice crystals. The directive is interim in nature; further rulemaking may follow. The source notes that later revisions of the service bulletins approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency are acceptable for compliance.
