What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/A320/93 Amendment 4 (MLG Forward Pintle Pin Cross Bolt), issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under subregulation 39.1(1) of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1998, requires inspection and modification work on the main landing gear (MLG) forward pintle pin cross bolt for affected Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. The directive revokes the earlier AD/A320/93 Amdt 3 and replaces it with the actions set out in the Requirement and Compliance sections of the document. Applicability is limited to "All Model A319, A320, and A321 aircraft without Airbus Industrie modification 28903 or 30044 in production or Service Bulletin A320-32-1213 in service" (Applicability).
Mechanically, the AD specifies three linked actions. First, Requirement 1 directs modification of the MLG forward pintle pin cross bolt in accordance with either Service Bulletin (SB) A320-32-1119 (original issue or Revision 1) with an associated inspection programme (Requirement 2) until a terminating modification is accomplished, or immediate modification using SB A320-32-1213 (original, Rev 1 or Rev 2). Second, Requirement 2 mandates detailed visual inspections of the left and right forward pintle pin cross bolts and any corrective actions specified in SB A320-32-1187; where earlier inspections under AOT 32-17 were done, a bolt torque check per SB A320-32-1187 is required (Requirement 2a). Third, Requirement 3 requires modification in accordance with SB A320-32-1213 (original, Rev 1 or Rev 2). Note 1 explicitly states that accomplishment of SB A320-32-1213 on both left and right main landing gears terminates the repeat inspection requirements of the Directive.
The Compliance section sets multiple time thresholds. For Requirement 1, modification must occur "before accumulation of 20,000 flights or during the next main landing gear overhaul, whichever occurs first" for all Model A320 aircraft without certain mods or SBs (Compliance 1). For the inspection programme under Requirement 2, three thresholds apply (whichever occurs later): within 30 months from first entry into service or before accumulation of 2,000 flights; or within 15 months or before 1,000 flights from accomplishment of SB A320-32-1119 or gear replacement; or within 500 flights from 26 March 1998; thereafter inspections repeat at intervals not to exceed 15 months or 1,000 flights until modification by SB A320-32-1213 (Compliance 2). Additional specific times govern Requirement 2a and Requirement 3 (Compliance 2a and 3). The AD became effective on 14 June 2001.
