Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This airworthiness directive requires Australian operators of specific Airbus A320 aircraft models (A320-111, A320-211, and A320-231) to modify the Standby Generator Control Unit (GCU) to improve its protection against lightning strikes.

What must be done:

Aircraft operators must carry out technical modifications specified in two Airbus Service Bulletins (A320-24-1022 and A320-24-1035).
These bulletins provide the exact engineering changes needed to prevent GCU malfunction during lightning events.

Who is affected:

Airlines and operators flying the specified A320 variants in Australian airspace.

Why this matters:

The GCU manages the standby electrical generator. Without these modifications, a lightning strike could cause the unit to fail, potentially compromising the aircraft's electrical systems and safety.

Compliance deadline:

The modifications had to be completed before 17 December 1990.
