What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) directed at certain Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 series aeroplanes. It requires a change to the electrical supply logic for the under-glare-shield flood lighting so that that lighting has a back-up supply on the battery hot bus. The AD frames the technical fix as a modification to electrical supply logic and specifies the required method of accomplishment: in accordance with the instructions in Airbus Service Bulletin (SB) A320-33-1057 or a later EASA-approved revision (Requirement). The AD gives a clear applicability scope, lists exclusions, sets an effective date and a compliance deadline (Applicability; Requirement; Compliance). The AD became effective on 13 March 2008 and requires compliance no later than 27 May 2011 (Compliance; effective date).
The instrument explains why the modification is required. The Background notes that EASA had advised of occurrences where loss of AC BUS 1 led to subsequent loss of AC ESS BUS and DC ESS BUS, producing loss of five upper Display Units and loss of integral lighting; in that state flight crew reported difficulty reading the standby instruments when the DOME lights were selected to OFF. The AD states that, if uncorrected, this could increase flight crew workload and constitutes an unsafe condition (Background). The AD therefore mandates adding the back-up battery-hot-bus supply to the under-glare-shield flood lighting to address the problem (Directive text).
Applicability is explicit. The AD applies to A318, A319, A320 and A321 series aeroplanes, all serial numbers, fitted with classical standby instruments installed by Airbus modification 20011 or 21999 during production or by Airbus SB A320-34-1280 whilst in service, except for two categories of aircraft: (a) aircraft fitted with an Integrated Standby Instrument System (ISIS) installed by Airbus modification 27620 during production or by Airbus SB A320-34-1261 or SB A320-34-1372 whilst in service; and (b) aircraft having received Airbus modification 37329 or 37330 during production or by Airbus SB A320-33-1057 whilst in service (Applicability). The AD also contains a note referencing EASA AD 2007-0286 (Note).
