What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/A320/209) mandates a one-time inspection and electrical continuity check of the cargo compartment fire extinguisher firing circuits on specified Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 aeroplanes, and requires rectification of any discrepancies found. The directive applies to aircraft delivered before 28 February 2007 that are fitted with a cargo compartment fire extinguisher bottle installed either during production or in service in accordance with an Airbus Service Bulletin, except aircraft on which Maintenance Review Board Report (MRBR) task 26.23.00/03 or 26.23.00/07 has already been performed (see "Applicability"). The inspection and check must be accomplished in accordance with Airbus Service Bulletin A320-26A1068 dated 19 March 2007, or a later revision approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) (see "Requirement 1"). Any discrepancies identified during that inspection must be rectified (see "Requirement 2"). As an alternative method of compliance, accomplishment of MRBR task 26.23.00/03 or 26.23.00/07 is expressly acceptable (see "Requirement" text). The AD incorporates by reference an EASA AD (EASA AD 2007-0249) and becomes effective on 22 November 2007. The compliance timing is specified in hours time in service: the Required inspection must be performed within the next 600 hours time in service after the effective date, and any rectification must be completed before the next flight after the inspection (see "Compliance"). The stated safety concern driving the directive is that EASA reported a cross connection of the fire extinguishing circuit found during planned maintenance on an A320; that cross connection could cause the wrong cargo extinguisher bottle to discharge in the event of a fire, thereby failing to discharge the correct bottle when required, a failure classified in the AD as potentially catastrophic (see "Background").
