What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) labelled AD/A320/197, concerning the landing gear gravity freefall control mechanism on certain Airbus Industrie A319, A320 and A321 series aeroplanes. It prescribes a mandatory set of maintenance and inspection actions to be carried out in accordance with Airbus Industrie All‑Operator‑Telex (AOT) 32‑15 dated 1 July 1997, or later DGAC approved revisions (Requirement). The specified corrective and verification work comprises an adjustment to the landing gear unlocked‑stop screw, replacement of shear pins in two assemblies, inspection and conditional replacement of the cut‑out valve, and both functional and operational tests of the landing gear extension systems (Requirement). The AD applies to narrow serial‑number ranges: A319 series MSN 578 through 625 inclusive, and A321‑100 series MSN 385 through 620 inclusive (Applicability). It sets a short compliance window: unless already done, the required actions must be completed within 50 flight hours or one month after the AD’s effective date, whichever occurs earlier (Compliance). The AD becomes effective on 15 February 2007 and is dated 5 January 2007, signed by James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Effective date and signature). The AD also refers to French DGAC AD 97‑177‑101(B) dated 13 August 1997 (Note).
Mechanically, the AD changes operators’ immediate maintenance obligations for the listed MSNs by imposing a mandatory physical inspection, parts replacement and functional testing regime that must be performed according to the referenced Airbus AOT and DGAC‑approved revisions. The AD identifies a production rigging defect as the safety hazard: incorrect rigging of the freefall control mechanism that can damage the cut‑out valve and the four shear pins in the freefall control mechanism, and which could result in non‑extension of one or more landing gears during gravity extension (Background). The instrument therefore converts a manufacturer/production quality issue into a regulatory compliance obligation for operators of the affected serial numbers.
