What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) imposes mandated inspections and a modification to the Airborne Ground Check Module (AGCM) installed on certain AIRBUS A320 family aeroplanes to address reports of unsuccessful in‑flight Ram Air Turbine (RAT) tests. The instrument applies to AIRBUS A320 aeroplanes fitted with Hamilton Sundstrand AGCM Part Numbers 769104, 769105 or 769106, except aeroplanes built with AIRBUS production modification 27189 if they also incorporated AIRBUS modification 28413 during production (Applicability). The AD requires two discrete actions.
First, operators must carry out the actions listed at paragraphs 4.1 and 4.2 of AIRBUS AOT 29A1112 Revision 1, or later DGAC‑approved revisions (Requirement 1). Those actions are mandated following any maintenance action on the blue hydraulic system until the AGCM has been modified (Background; Compliance). The Directive prescribes specific timing for that first requirement: for aeroplanes that had completed a particular blue hydraulic maintenance action before the AD’s original effective date, the AOT actions must be completed within three days or 20 flight hours after 14 April 2005; for aeroplanes that undergo any maintenance on the blue hydraulic system after the AD’s effective date, the AOT actions must be completed before further flight (Compliance).
Second, the AD requires modification of the AGCM in accordance with AIRBUS Service Bulletin A320‑29‑1111, or later DGAC‑approved revisions; incorporation of that modification provides terminating action for the Directive (Requirement 2). The compliance deadline for the modification is set as before 31 July 2007 (Compliance).
The AD further references DGAC AD F‑2004‑150(b) and an EASA approval number (No 2004‑9025 dated 24 August 2004) (Requirement note). The instrument became effective as amended on 4 August 2005 (Amendment effective date). The Background states the safety concern and the intended technical fix: trapped air in the RAT can lead to pump cavitation and thus failure to pressurise the blue hydraulic system; the specified modification prevents the trapping of air (Background). The amendment at Amdt 1 is said to correct a typographical error in the background only, without changing requirements or compliance periods (Background).
