What it does
This airworthiness directive (AD) requires Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aeroplane operators who have IAE V2500-A1 or V2500-A5 engines installed to establish whether a specific engine rear mount barrel nut, part number (P/N) 83644-1612, may be installed on their aircraft, and to take inspection and corrective action where necessary. The AD sets a documentation-check obligation followed, where records do not establish the correct standard of installation or positively indicate the affected part may be installed, by mandated visual inspections. Where inspections identify broken barrel nuts or an incorrect number of P/N 83644-1612 nuts installed, the AD prescribes different corrective steps depending on the finding (contact Airbus for corrective actions if broken parts are found, correct the installation where two or more of the part are installed, or remove and replace where only one example of the part is installed). The AD includes a prohibition on future installation of barrel nuts P/N 83644-1612 on aircraft (see “Do not install engine mount barrel nuts P/N 83644-1612 on an aircraft”).
Compliance timeframes are explicit: documentation checks and the initial visual inspections must be completed within seven days after the AD’s effective date, unless already done. Where the finding is broken nuts or two-or-more incorrect nuts installed, the mandated corrective action must be done before further flight. Where only a single P/N 83644-1612 is found installed, removal and replacement must occur within 1,200 flight hours or 960 flight cycles since installation of the part, whichever occurs first. The AD becomes effective on 29 October 2008, and it expressly refers to Airbus All Operator Telex (AOT) A320-71A1045 dated 17 October 2008 or later as the source of inspection and corrective-action procedures to be followed.
The AD identifies the proximate cause as Airbus having incorporated an incorrect part number in the Illustrated Parts Catalogue for the rear engine mount barrel nut (reference 71-22-11 Figure 80B item 180), and states that the part number introduced in error is not certificated for the V2500-A5 engine installation and, if installed, may fail in service. The AD notes that it supersedes DGAC AD 90-079-009(B) R1 and that it refers to EASA AD 2008-0191-E dated 20 October 2008. The AD is signed by the Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and dated 24 October 2008.
