What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) directed at a defined subset of Agusta A109E helicopters, requiring a specific electrical modification to the fuselage and overhead-panel installations. Mechanically, the AD mandates replacement of the existing 35 Amp BATT BUS circuit breaker with a 50 Amp circuit breaker and replacement of the associated wiring with oversized wires. The prescribed modification is to be effected by installing the BATT BUS circuit breaker modification kit P/N 109-0824-73-101 into two specific assemblies: the fuselage electrical installation P/N 109-0741-49 and the overhead panel electrical installation P/N 109-0741-55. The work must be performed in accordance with the instructions of Agusta Bollettino Tecnico 109EP-98 dated 22 June 2009, or a later revision of that Bollettino provided it has been approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The AD makes explicit reference to EASA AD 2009-0137.
The AD sets a compliance window. Work must be completed within 50 hours time in service after the AD’s effective date, or, alternatively, no later than 31 December 2009, whichever comes first. The AD’s effective date is recorded as 7 July 2009. The AD identifies its triggering event in a concise background: following a report of an electrical failure on one A109E helicopter, the Type Certificate holder’s investigation attributed the failure to inadequate functioning of the 35 Amp BATT BUS circuit breaker. The modification kit was developed by Agusta to replace the 35 Amp breaker with a 50 Amp breaker and to oversize the wires, the stated intent being to prevent the identified unsafe condition.
The AD is signed by a Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and dated 30 June 2009. It is formulated as a mandatory directive with an explicit applicability matrix (serial numbers and equipment fitment) and a prescribed modification procedure reference. The text does not include monetary penalties, funding provisions, or delegated enforcement mechanisms beyond the issuance and effective date of the AD itself.
