Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This is a mandatory safety order requiring a specific electrical modification on certain Agusta helicopters to prevent a dangerous dual generator failure.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Agusta A109A and A109AII helicopters with serial numbers up to 7400 (excluding serial numbers 7187, 7366, and 7396).

What you must do: Whenever you replace the GCU (Generator Control Unit) box, you must modify the overhead console relay boards by following the instructions in Agusta's Technical Bulletin No. 109-73.

Why it matters: A modified GCU box (part number 51509-002R) manufactured by Lear Siegler can cause both the No. 1 and No. 2 generators to stop working simultaneously, potentially leading to complete electrical failure during flight.

Compliance deadline: This modification had to be completed before 26 January 1990, or immediately upon replacing the GCU box if that occurred earlier.
