PHILLIPS, C.J.: The applicant, who is aged 40, was involved in a series of proceedings in the County Court at Melbourne in late 1996 and early 1997. On 28 October, 1996 a presentment was filed which alleged against him 30 counts of sexual offences and a single count of attempting to pervert the course of justice. The complainants in the sexual offence counts were a daughter of the applicant and two of her cousins. On 30 October the applicant was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all the counts. On 4 November an application made on his part for severance of the presentment was partially successful. On 6 November a new presentment (ZB1030A) was filed and this contained a single count of indecent assault. The complainant was one "B.S.", a cousin of the applicant's daughter "M.E.". The applicant pleaded not guilty upon arraignment and a jury acquitted him on 7 November.
