Sri Lanka because of your father's employment in the Australian Army and relocations in that employment. Your father is of Sri Lankan background. 4. Your childhood was marred by exposure to domestic violence. Reportedly, your father had abused alcohol and was physically abusive towards your mother. 5. Your mother had a mental illness which added to the stress of the home environment. I have been provided with documents which confirm your mother's psychiatric illness. You describe having to live in refuges on occasion to escape your father's violent conduct. 6. You attended several secondary schools, including at an international school in
Sri Lanka. You finished school before the end of Year 10 when you were expelled for drug use. Truancy had been an issue before that. 7. Your upbringing made it difficult for you to find stability and had an impact on your education and your ability to form friendships and supportive relationships. 8. Once you left school you worked as a roof tiler for around five months and you have also worked as a picker and packer. 9. You stated drinking alcohol when you were 16 years old. You also began smoking cannabis at the age of 15 and suffered an episode of drug induced psychosis when you were 19. 10. At the age of 16 you spent some time in Sri Lanka due to problems at home. You also spent some time in foster care, after which you experienced some homelessness. 11. From 2021 you had limited contact with your mother who suffers from schizophrenia. I have been told that you had a phone call with her at the beginning of your remand period for these offences, but you have had no contact with her since then.
Ms Cidoni's opinion about imprisonment being more burdensome and I have also taken this into account as a mitigating factor.
