### sec.16 Meaning of parent
A parent , of a child, means—
the child’s mother or father; and
anyone else, other than the chief executive (child protection), having or exercising parental responsibility for the child.
However, a parent of a child does not include—
a person standing in the place of a parent of the child on a temporary basis; or
an approved foster carer for the child; or
an approved kinship carer for the child.
A parent of an Aboriginal child includes a person who, under Aboriginal tradition, is regarded as a parent of the child.
A parent of a Torres Strait Islander child includes a person who, under Island custom, is regarded as a parent of the child.
In this section—
approved foster carer see the Child Protection Act 1999 , schedule 3 .
approved kinship carer see the Child Protection Act 1999 , schedule 3 .
(sec.16-ssec.1) A parent , of a child, means— the child’s mother or father; and anyone else, other than the chief executive (child protection), having or exercising parental responsibility for the child.
