What it does
The State Authorities Superannuation Act 1987 (NSW) established the State Authorities Superannuation Scheme (SASS), a defined-benefit accumulation superannuation scheme for NSW State government employees. The scheme commenced on 1 April 1988. It was closed to new entrants on 19 December 1992 (section 2A), meaning no new employees may join. Only those who made elections to contribute before the closure date (or who are eligible to resume under section 2B or 2C) remain members.
The Act continues as governing legislation for existing contributors and their benefit entitlements. It establishes the State Authorities Superannuation Fund, the contributor account structure, contribution obligations, benefit calculations and payment rules, and the family law superannuation splitting framework.
