in Brisbane. An analysis made by Mrs Smith of the average
weekly price differential of southern abattoir prices, on the
one hand, against the northern region and central regions, on
the other, for manufacturing cows (all weights), expressed in
cents per kilogram, shows the following sequence for the 30
weeks from 9 January to 14 August 1987: -5, +4, +11, +5, +11,
+6, +9, -2, +5, 0, 0, 0, -3, -3, +12, +18, +14, +14, +7, +26,
+5, +5, +2, +12, +2, +2, +11, +11, +1, +1. Positive figures
apply to weeks in which the southern price was higher than the
northern/central price; negative figures where the advantage
was the other way. The range of difference was 31 cents (from
+26 to -5). The mean difference was +6 cents. From 21 August
to 18 November 1987 Mrs Smith separately analysed the price
differential of manufacturing cows over 320 kilograms and
manufacturing bulls over 540 kilograms. The range of
difference was much the same. Moreover, these two categories
sometimes moved in opposite directions. Thus, in the period
from 4 September to 9 October, the cow figures were +4, -12,
-12, -4, +9 and +6, whereas the figures for bulls were +13,
