[145] In the event that the plaintiff loses his parents (rather than simply losing their full-time sole care) it may well be that the plaintiff will be forced into a group housing environment. If that happens it seems likely, on the evidence, that his condition will then deteriorate substantially. The cost of group accommodation now, which, at the present stage of the plaintiff's development, would, in my view, be disastrous for him, would be a little under $2,000.00 per week. The weekly rate for future care with a one-on-one professional carer is about $2,900.00 a week. Should the plaintiff eventually be forced into a group housing care position, it may be, on the medical evidence, that he will be much more mature and past his problems with adolescence. The cost of accommodation and care in a group housing environment is about two- thirds of that of a one-on-one care environment which would most nearly replicate that which he receives at present from his parents. Unfortunately for the plaintiff, as a consequence of the use of the 5% discount rate required by s 16(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1995 in assessing damages for future commercial care, it seems likely that with an increase in the rate of inflation the real cost of that care will exhaust the fund to be managed on his behalf before the expiration of his statistical life span in 60 years' time.
