Subsection (1) applies whether or not a particular word or expression is defined in Annex I or II. Except as far as the context or subject matter otherwise indicates or requires, if a word or expression is defined in Annex I or II to MARPOL and this part— this part’s definition does not limit or exclude, but may extend, the meaning of the word or expression given under Annex I or II; and the definitions are to be read in the context of each other and the other provisions of this Act, but, if the definitions so read are inconsistent, the Annex I or II definition is displaced.
