### sec.17 Adjournment of poll at polling booth
A returning officer may adjourn the poll at a polling booth to another day if the returning officer is satisfied the taking of the poll at the polling booth is, or is likely to be, interrupted or obstructed by a thing stated in subsection (2) to the extent that the taking of the poll can not start or continue at the polling booth.
For subsection (1) , the things are as follows—
a storm, flood, fire or similar happening;
a riot or open violence;
a serious threat of a riot or open violence happening;
a serious risk to the health or safety of persons at the polling booth;
another emergency.
If the poll is adjourned under subsection (1) or section 16B (3) , the commission must fix a day (not later than 34 days after the polling day) for taking, or resuming, the adjourned poll.
The commission must give notice of the day fixed for taking, or resuming, the adjourned poll on the commission’s website and in other ways the commission considers appropriate.
If an adjourned poll is held, only electors who are enrolled in the electoral district for which the polling booth is established and who have not already voted, are entitled to vote.
If a poll is adjourned under subsection (1) and the commission is satisfied that the number of votes likely to be cast at the polling booth will not affect the overall referendum result, the commission may abandon the poll at the polling booth.
The adjourned poll is taken to have been held on the polling day.
