What it does
The Public Health Act 2016 (WA) is Western Australia's principal public health statute. It replaces the Health Act 1911 (WA) as the governing public health framework and establishes a modern, risk-based system for protecting and improving community health. The Act is administered primarily by the Chief Health Officer and a network of authorised officers, environmental health officers, and enforcement agencies.
The Act's objects (section 3) are to: protect and improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities; reduce inequalities in health between different sections of the community; prevent, control, and reduce the effects of disease; promote health literacy; and promote the sustainable use of health resources. It is guided by principles including proportionate responses, evidence-based decision-making, human rights respect, transparency, and recognition of the right of individuals to make informed decisions about their own health.
