### sec.17 Steps police officer may take for failure to give name and address etc. to public official
This section applies if a police officer reasonably suspects a person required by a public official under another Act to state the person’s name and address or date of birth has failed to comply with the requirement.
The police officer may ask the person whether the person has a reasonable excuse for not complying with the requirement and, if the person gives an excuse, ask for details or further details of the excuse.
If the person does not answer the question or gives an excuse that the police officer reasonably suspects is not a reasonable excuse, the police officer may, under chapter 2 , part 4 , require the person to state the following—
the person’s name and address;
the person’s date of birth.

This section does not apply if the public official is a police officer.
(sec.17-ssec.1) This section applies if a police officer reasonably suspects a person required by a public official under another Act to state the person’s name and address or date of birth has failed to comply with the requirement.
(sec.17-ssec.2) The police officer may ask the person whether the person has a reasonable excuse for not complying with the requirement and, if the person gives an excuse, ask for details or further details of the excuse.
(sec.17-ssec.3) If the person does not answer the question or gives an excuse that the police officer reasonably suspects is not a reasonable excuse, the police officer may, under chapter 2 , part 4 , require the person to state the following— the person’s name and address; the person’s date of birth. See section 791 (Offence to contravene direction or requirement of police officer).
(sec.17-ssec.4) This section does not apply if the public official is a police officer.
- (a) the person’s name and address;
- (b) the person’s date of birth.
