### sec.24 Date of by-elections A by-election to fill a vacancy in the office of a councillor is to be held on the day fixed by the returning officer. The day fixed must be within 2 months after the vacancy happens. As soon as practicable after fixing the day for holding a by-election, the returning officer must— publish, on the electoral commission’s website and in the other ways that the officer may consider appropriate, notice of— the day fixed; and the cut-off day for the voters roll for the by-election under section 18 (3) ; and take the steps required by this Act for holding the by-election. s 24 amd 2012 No. 33 s 179 ; 2019 No. 30 s 160 ; 2020 No. 38 s 54 (sec.24-ssec.1) A by-election to fill a vacancy in the office of a councillor is to be held on the day fixed by the returning officer.
