What it does
The Forest Management Act 2013 (Tas) governs the management of Tasmania's permanent timber production zone land and the operations of the Forestry corporation as the statutory Forest Manager. It establishes:
- the legal framework for sustainable forest management on Crown land reserved for timber production;
- the role and functions of the Forestry corporation as the Forest Manager;
- the mechanism for declaring Crown land as permanent timber production zone land;
- mandatory annual wood supply obligations for the timber industry;
- compensation arrangements for the forest products industry where government action diminishes log availability; and
- the governance and accountability of the Forestry corporation.
The Act is part of the broader Tasmanian forest management framework, operating alongside the Forest Practices Act 1985 (which governs the Forest Practices Code), the Forest Practices Authority, the Nature Conservation Act 2002, and the Government Business Enterprises Act 1995.
