#### 6A General duties of councils 6A General duties of councils > > (1) A council is required— > > > > > (a) to promote awareness within its area of the requirements of this Act with respect to the ownership of companion animals, and > > > > > (b) to take such steps as are appropriate to ensure that it is notified or otherwise made aware of the existence of all dangerous, menacing and restricted dogs (including dogs that might reasonably be considered to be the subject of a declaration under Division 1 or 6 of Part 5) that are ordinarily kept within its area. > > > (2) Subsection (1) does not limit the other functions that may be conferred or imposed on a council by or under this Act. > > Note. > > Councils also have functions in relation to companion animals under other legislation. For example, the number of dogs or cats that are able to be kept on premises can be restricted by a council by giving an order to the occupier in terms of order No 18 in the Table to section 124 of the [Local Government Act 1993](/view/html/inforce/current/act-1993-030). > > **s 6A:** Ins 2005 No 101, Sch 1 \[8\].
