What it does
The Community Protection (Offender Reporting) Act 2004 (WA) requires certain offenders to register with police and keep them informed of their whereabouts and personal details for specified periods following conviction. Its long title describes its purpose as reducing the likelihood of re-offending and facilitating the investigation and prosecution of any future offences that offenders may commit, and enabling publication of information about certain offenders and court orders prohibiting specified conduct.
The Act creates the Western Australian sex and serious offender register, establishes the Commissioner of Police as the responsible authority, and provides for cooperation with equivalent schemes in other jurisdictions through a national recognition framework.
