It tidies up the legal status of about 6.5 acres of land that had been set aside for public recreation since the late 1800s.\n\n**The problem it solved:**\nBack in 1889 and 1921, the government had \"reserved\" (set aside) Crown land at Yarraville for public recreation using documents called \"Orders in Council.\" By 1967, the council wanted to:\n- Add some extra land to the recreation reserve\n- Remove a small portion from the reservation\n- Give the local council clearer power to lease a tiny slice (22 perches — roughly 550 square metres) for a community club\n\n**What the Act actually does:**\n\n1. **Cancels the old paperwork** — Revokes the 1889 and 1921 Orders in Council and starts fresh\n\n2. **Re-reserves the land** — Declares the land (described in Schedule 1) is now permanently reserved under Victoria's *Land Act 1958* for recreation purposes, free of any old restrictions\n\n3. **Appoints the manager** — Makes the City of Footscray council the official \"committee of management\" (the body responsible for looking after the land)\n\n4. **Allows a specific lease** — Lets the council lease one small corner (Schedule 2 — 22 perches) for up to 21 years for \"club rooms for amusement and recreation\" (think: bowling club, tennis club, community hall). Leases over 3 years need state government approval\n\n5. **Ring-fences the money** — Any rent from that lease must go back into maintaining the rest of the park, unless the Minister approves otherwise\n\n6. **No compensation** — Blocks anyone from claiming money from the government for anything done under this Act\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- Residents of Yarraville who use the recreation ground\n- The City of Footscray (now part of Maribyrnong City Council) as the land manager\n- Any community group wanting to lease the club room site\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis is typical of dozens of \"lands Acts\" passed by Victorian Parliament in the 1960s-70s. Instead of using general powers, Parliament passed specific Acts for individual parcels of land to fix messy historical paperwork. It ensures the park stays as public open space while allowing a practical exception for a community facility."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967","history":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967/history","analysis":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/yarraville-recreation-ground-lands-act-1967/documents"}}
