It covers:\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- Farmers and landholders who want to take water from rivers, lakes or underground sources\n- Businesses using water for mining, industry, or town water supply\n- Public authorities like government departments, rail corporations, and local councils\n- Groups of landholders running joint water supply schemes\n\n**What it does:**\n- **Application process:** Specifies which forms to use when applying for different types of water licences, permits, and authorities (legal permissions to take and use water)\n- **Fees and charges:** Sets out detailed fee schedules based on water usage rates, land area to be irrigated, and type of works (pumps, dams, channels). Fees range from $6 for short-term permits to hundreds of dollars for large irrigation licences\n- **Water transfers:** Creates a system for buying, selling, or temporarily leasing water rights between licence holders, including rules for permanent transfers (selling water rights forever) and temporary transfers (leasing for up to 5 years)\n- **Annual reporting:** Requires licence holders to submit yearly returns about how much land they irrigated, what crops they grew, and how much water they used\n- **Definitions:** Clarifies which waterways count as \"rivers\" under the law and which specific streams are excluded\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis Regulation puts the practical machinery in place for water allocation in NSW. It determines how much people pay to access water, how they can trade water rights, and ensures the government can track water usage for environmental and resource management purposes."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997","history":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997/history","analysis":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/water-part-2-general-regulation-1997/documents"}}
