This notice says those rules **don't apply** to \"light aircraft pig trailers\" — **BUT only if** the operator follows 11 specific safety conditions, including:\n\n- Only using a light vehicle to tow the trailer\n- Keeping the rear overhang under 5 metres (with extra rules if it exceeds 3.7m)\n- Displaying oversize vehicle signs and warning lights when required\n- Using headlights on low beam during daylight hours\n- Attaching a red flag to the back of the load\n- Ensuring the trailer always exerts downward force on the towbar\n\n**The \"grandfathering\" clause:**\n\nThere's a special exception to one rule: if a trailer was already registered before this notice started, and stays registered without any gaps, it gets to ignore the width restriction on long overhangs. This protects existing operators who already own compliant trailers.\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nLight aircraft can't easily be taken apart to fit on standard trailers. Without this exemption, moving a small plane by road would be technically illegal or require expensive permits. This creates a streamlined, safety-regulated pathway for a niche but important transport need — particularly for the aviation community in regional areas.\n\n**Key definitions:**\n- **Pig trailer:** A trailer with one axle group near the middle, which pivots on the towbar (unlike a box trailer that has its own wheels at the back)\n- **Light aircraft:** Defined here as a plane that (a) fits on this special trailer, and (b) *cannot* be compacted or disassembled to fit on a standard light vehicle trailer"}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024","history":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024/history","analysis":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/vehicle-and-traffic-vehicle-operations-pig-trailers-transporting-light-aircraft-notice-2024/documents"}}
