This exemption **allows longer setups** — but only for pig trailers specifically built to carry **yachts, rowing boats, or surfboats**.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n\n- **Boat owners and clubs** in Tasmania who need to transport yachts, rowing boats, or surfboats\n- **Drivers towing these trailers** with light vehicles (cars, utes, small trucks — not heavy trucks)\n\n**The catch — strict conditions apply:**\n\n- **Total length** of car + trailer + boat must stay under **25 metres** (that's still very long — about the length of two buses)\n- If over **22 metres**: need oversize warning signs front and back, plus warning lights at night\n- **Rear overhang** (how far the boat sticks out the back) can't exceed **5 metres**\n- If rear overhang exceeds **3.7 metres**: need those oversize signs again\n- **Daytime towing**: headlights on low beam, plus a **red flag** on the very back of the boat\n- **Night travel**: proper side and rear marker lights required\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nBoats like yachts and surfboats are naturally long and awkward to transport. Without this exemption, many would be illegal to tow on Tasmanian roads. This lets sailing clubs, rowing teams, and boat owners move their equipment legally — provided they follow the safety conditions designed to warn other drivers about the extra length and overhang."},"flash_summary":{"complexity_score":4,"scope_assessment":{"changed":true,"description":"This instrument creates a specific, temporary exemption to regulations 13 and 14(3) of the Vehicle Operations Regulations for pig trailers transporting yachts, rowing boats or surfboats, subject to detailed conditions (see cl 5(2)–(3)).
