It applies to 'Queensland regulated ships'—essentially recreational vessels that aren't commercial ships or interstate vessels.\n\n**What equipment is required depends on:**\n- **The size of the vessel** (under 5m, 5–8m, over 8m)\n- **Where you're boating** ('smooth waters' like rivers and creeks vs 'partially smooth waters' like coastal areas vs open ocean)\n- **Whether it's a personal watercraft** (jet ski) or conventional boat\n\n**Key requirements include:**\n- **Lifejackets**: Must be carried for everyone aged 1 year and over, with specific types required depending on water conditions (Level 50, Level 50S, Level 100, or compliant inflatable diver's jackets)\n- **Anchors**: Size and cable length rules based on vessel length and water type\n- **Navigation gear**: Compass and charts for boats in coastal/open waters; personal watercraft can use electronic devices instead\n- **Bailing equipment**: Buckets or pumps with minimum capacity rules\n- **Emergency signals**: Flares and smoke signals for boats operating in coastal or open waters\n- **Firefighting gear**: Required for vessels over 5m\n- **Drinking water**: Must be carried for all passengers for the duration of the trip\n- **Backup propulsion**: Small boats (under 6m) need oars or paddles unless they have a spare motor\n\n**Important exceptions:**\n- Some small tenders (dinghies) don't need lifejackets if they stay within 1km of their parent vessel and have flotation certificates\n- Boats with 'level flotation' (designed to stay afloat when swamped) operating in enclosed waters may skip lifejackets if they have grab rails\n- Personal watercraft used in organised events or very close to shore have reduced requirements\n- Lifejackets don't count as 'carried' if people aren't wearing them while crossing coastal bars (dangerous river mouths)\n\n**Why it matters:** This standard helps boat owners understand their 'general safety obligation' under the main Marine Safety Act. If you don't carry this equipment and something goes wrong, you could face penalties, and more importantly, you might not survive an emergency. The rules are designed to match risk to conditions—less gear needed on a calm river, more gear needed offshore."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017","history":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017/history","analysis":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/transport-operations-marine-safety-queensland-regulated-ships-miscellaneous-equipment-standard-2017/documents"}}
