In this Statement of Principles if a relevant factor applies and that factor includes an injury or disease in respect of which there is a Statement of Principles then the factors in that last mentioned Statement of Principles apply in accordance with the terms of that Statement of Principles as in force from time to time.\n\nOther definitions\n\n9. For the purposes of this Statement of Principles:\n\n“death from dysbaric osteonecrosis” in relation to a person includes death from a terminal event or condition that was contributed to by the person’s dysbaric osteonecrosis;\n\n“decompression after hyperbaric exposure” means a reduction in the ambient barometric pressure exerted by the envelope of air or water surrounding the person after a period of increased pressure, occurring with:\n\n(a) diving; or\n\n(b) ascending from a submerged craft or device, or a pressurised tunnel; or\n\n(c) decompression after being compressed in a hyperbaric chamber;\n\n“relevant service” means:\n\n(a) eligible war service (other than operational service) under the VEA; or\n\n(b) defence service (other than hazardous service) under the VEA; or\n\n(c) peacetime service under the MRCA;\n\n“terminal event” means the proximate or ultimate cause of death and includes:\n\n(a) pneumonia;\n\n(b) respiratory failure;\n\n(c) cardiac arrest;\n\n(d) circulatory failure; or\n\n(e) cessation of brain function.\n\nDate of effect\n\n10.
