1\\]\n\nThis Determination is the Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Maritime Ship Licence) Determination 2002.\n\n1.2 Commencement \\[see Note 1\\]\n\nThis Determination commences on gazettal.\n\n1.3 Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Maritime Ship Licence) Determination No 1 of 1997 — repeal\n\nRadiocommunications Licence Conditions (Maritime Ship Licence) Determination No 1 of 1997, notified in the Gazette on 9 July 1997, is repealed.\n\n1.4 Definitions\n\n(1) In this Determination:\n\n> AMSA means the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.\n\n> calling means operating a maritime ship station to establish contact with another station.\n\n> commercial operations means the activities of commercial vessels (other than professional fishing and port operations).\n\n> distress, in relation to a transmission, means that a ship, aircraft or person is threatened by grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance.\n\n> DSC (also known as digital selective calling) means a digital system of communications used for the following purposes:\n\n(a) transmitting distress alerts from ships;\n\n(b) transmitting acknowledgments of distress alerts from shore stations;\n\n(c) relaying distress alerts;\n\n(d) transmitting alerts prior to the broadcast of urgency and safety messages.\n\n> Note The transmission of a distress alert indicates that a ship is threatened by grave and imminent danger, and is requesting immediate assistance. A distress alert is a digital selective call, using a distress call format, that provides the identification of the station in distress and its position.\n\n> Inmarsat means International Maritime Satellite Organisation.\n\n> inshore boating radio service means a maritime mobile service between a limited coast station and a maritime ship station operating in inshore waters or inland waterways.\n\n> LCMRS means limited coast marine rescue station.\n\n> LCS means any of the following stations:\n\n(a) a maritime coast station operating as part of a limited coast assigned system;\n\n(b) a limited coast non assigned station;\n\n(c) a limited coast marine rescue station.\n\n> licence means:\n\n(a) a maritime ship licence (ship station Class A); or\n\n(b) a maritime ship licence (ship station Class B assigned); or\n\n(c) a maritime ship licence (ship station Class B non assigned); or\n\n(d) a maritime ship licence (ship station Class C assigned); or\n\n> licensee means the holder of a licence, and includes any person authorised by the licensee to operate a station under the licence.\n\n> maritime ship licence (ship station Class A) means a maritime ship licence authorising the holder to operate a ship station Class A.\n\n> maritime ship licence (ship station Class B assigned) means a maritime ship licence authorising the holder to operate a ship station Class B assigned.\n\n> maritime ship licence (ship station Class B non assigned) means a maritime ship licence authorising the holder to operate a ship station Class B non assigned.\n\n> maritime ship licence (ship station Class C assigned) means a maritime ship licence authorising the holder to operate a ship station Class C assigned.\n\n> maritime ship licence (ship station Class C non assigned) means a maritime ship licence authorising the holder to operate a ship station Class C non assigned.\n\n> MCS means major coast station.\n\n> NBDP means narrow-band direct-printing.\n\n> non-commercial operations means maritime operations other than:\n\n(a) commercial operations; and\n\n(b) port operations; and\n\n(c) professional fishing operations.\n\n> port operations means activities relating to the operational handling, movement and navigation of ships in, or near, a port.\n\n> professional fishing operations, in relation to a station operated under a licence, means the licensee’s professional fishing activities.\n\n> radiodetermination communications means communications:\n\n(a) for determining 1 or more of the following:\n\n(i) the position of an object;\n\n(ii) the velocity of the object;\n\n(iii) other characteristics of the object; or\n\n(b) for obtaining information allowing a person to determine any of the matters.\n\n> relevant document, for a maritime ship station, means the document:\n\n(a) that was published most recently before the station was manufactured or imported; It affects shipowners, radio operators, coast and satellite stations required to hold maritime ship licences, who must equip and operate stations to these detailed rules.
