It covers everything from X-ray machines in hospitals to radioactive materials used in mining.\n\n**What it does:**\n- **Sets up a licensing system** — anyone who wants to manufacture, sell, possess, use, store, transport or dispose of a \"radiation source\" needs a licence from the Chief Health Officer. Radiation sources include radioactive materials (like uranium) and radiation apparatus (like X-ray machines).\n- **Requires registration** — owners must register their radiation sources, and occupiers must register places where radiation sources are used or stored.\n- **Creates accreditation for specialists** — people who work on radiation sources (installing, testing, repairing) or issue compliance certificates need special accreditation.\n- **Mandates safety duties** — licence holders must take all reasonable steps to prevent harm to people or the environment, follow approved radiation protection plans, and immediately report dangerous events like lost sources or equipment malfunctions.\n- **Adds special rules for mining sites** — operators must monitor radiation exposure for workers and keep detailed records, with strict confidentiality protections.\n- **Gives enforcement powers** — authorised officers can enter premises, inspect equipment, seize dangerous items, require information, and issue directions to stop unsafe practices.\n- **Provides review rights** — decisions by the Chief Health Officer can be appealed to the Local Court.\n\n**Who it affects:** Hospitals, dental clinics, mining companies, industrial users of radiation equipment, and anyone handling radioactive materials. It also protects workers exposed to radiation and the general public.\n\n**Key features:** The Act distinguishes between *ionising* radiation (nuclear, X-rays) and *non-ionising* radiation (longer wavelength electromagnetic radiation like some lasers). It includes detailed procedural rules for applications, renewals, variations, suspensions and cancellations of authorities, with natural justice protections (show cause notices, right to make representations)."},"flash_summary_failed":{"failed":true,"reason":"Unauthenticated.
