These powers relate to managing church property and affairs.\n- **Keeps property arrangements**: Church land, buildings (churches, chapels, ministers' houses), burial grounds, and other real estate held by trustees for Victorian congregations stays with those same trustees — but now they hold it on behalf of the Victorian Synod instead of the Australian one.\n- **Adds a doctrinal condition**: The powers only continue if the Synod of Victoria stays faithful to specific Scottish Presbyterian standards — the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, and other documents from 1643 that define Presbyterian beliefs and church government.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- The Presbyterian Church in Victoria (specifically its governing body, the Synod)\n- Trustees holding property for Presbyterian congregations\n- Ministers and congregations previously under the Sydney-based Synod of Australia\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis was essentially Victoria's \"church independence\" act. When Victoria separated from New South Wales as a colony in 1851, its Presbyterian congregations wanted their own governing body rather than being a remote outpost controlled from Sydney. The law let Victorian Presbyterians manage their own property and affairs locally, while maintaining ties to Scottish Presbyterian traditions through the doctrinal requirements."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854","history":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854/history","analysis":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/presbyterian-synod-of-victoria-act-1854/documents"}}
