For 2015-2016, this was set at $120,835. After that, an independent body called the **Tasmanian Industrial Commission** reviews and determines the salary. The Commission must report to Parliament at least every 12 months.\n* **Additional salary:** MPs who hold special offices (like the Premier, Ministers, Speaker, Opposition Leader, Committee Chairs, etc.) get extra pay on top of their basic salary. These are calculated as percentages of the basic salary (e.g., the Premier gets an extra 115%).\n* **Allowances:** MPs can claim various allowances including:\n * Motor vehicle allowance (~$15,000/year)\n * Electorate allowance (varies by location, roughly $30,000–$51,000/year)\n * Committee sitting fees\n * Telecommunications (phone/internet)\n * Entertainment allowance (for senior office holders)\n * Travel allowances\n* **Superannuation:** MPs elected after 1 July 1999 are treated as employees under the Public Sector Superannuation Reform Act 2016.\n* **Salary sacrifice:** MPs can choose to have part of their salary paid as superannuation contributions instead of cash.\n* **Parliamentary oversight:** The Commission's salary determinations are tabled in Parliament and can be disallowed (rejected) by either House within 10 sitting days.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n\n* All members of the Tasmanian Parliament (House of Assembly and Legislative Council)\n* The Tasmanian Industrial Commission (which conducts independent reviews)\n* The Treasurer and Department of Premier and Cabinet (who administer different parts of the Act)\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nThis law removes politicians' ability to set their own pay.
