This Act may be cited as the Parliamentary Allowances Act 1920.\n\nRepeal.\n\n2. The Parliamentary Allowances Act 1907 is hereby repealed.\n\n  \n\nAmount of allowance.\n\n3. Each senator and each member of the House of Representatives shall receive an allowance of One thousand pounds a year:\n\nProvided that in the case of a senator or member of the House of Representatives who holds any of the following offices, namely. Minister of State, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chairman of Committees of the Senate, or Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives, the allowance shall be Eight hundred pounds a year in addition to the emoluments of his office.\n\nReckoning of allowance to senator.\n\n4. The allowance to a senator shall be reckoned—\n\n(a) in the case of a senator chosen at the first election after a dissolution of the Senate—from the day of his election;\n\n(b) in the case of a senator chosen to fill a place which is to become vacant in rotation—from the first day of July following the day of his election;\n\n(c) in the case of a senator chosen or appointed to fill a casual vacancy—from the day on which his name is certified by the Governor of a State to the Governor-General.\n\nReckoning of allowance to member.\n\n5. The allowance to a member of the House of Representatives shall be reckoned from the day of his election.\n\nCommencement of application of Act.\n\n6. In relation to the allowances of senators and members of the House of Representatives holding their seats at the commencement of this Act, the provisions of this Act shall apply as from the date of the assent to the Act.\n\nAllowances to Leaders of Opposition.\n\n7. In addition to any other allowance payable under this Act there shall be payable to the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, an allowance at the rate of Two hundred pounds a year, and to the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, an allowance at the rate of Four hundred pounds a year.\n\nAppropriation\n\n8. The allowances provided for by this Act shall be payable out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund, which is hereby appropriated accordingly.\n\nUnclaimed allowances.\n\n9.
