Licensing requirements**\n- Sets out how to apply for and renew electrical contractor licences (for businesses) and electrical practitioner licences (for individual sparkies)\n- Requires contractors to hold insurance\n- Allows recognition of interstate licences (\"reciprocating jurisdictions\")\n- Lets the Administrator issue provisional or restricted licences for people with partial qualifications\n\n**2. Defining what counts as \"electrical work\"**\n- Covers installing, repairing, altering or removing electrical circuits, equipment, and infrastructure\n- Includes work on batteries and storage systems connected to installations\n- **Excludes** certain low-risk activities like plugging in appliances, repairing small household items, extra-low voltage work in safe areas, and work on vehicles, boats, or aircraft\n\n**3. Notification and record-keeping**\n- Requires electrical work to be recorded and kept for 10 years\n- Some work must be notified to authorities before, during, or after completion (depending on classification)\n- Copies of records must be given to the customer\n\n**4. Safety inspections and defective work**\n- Authorised officers can inspect work, especially high-voltage or hazardous area work\n- Defective work is classified as either \"severely defective\" (dangerous) or regular defective\n- Officers can issue notices requiring repairs, disconnect dangerous work, and reinspect\n- Fines apply for failing to rectify defects or notify authorities\n- Contractors generally cannot charge customers for fixing their own defective work\n\n**5. Enforcement powers**\n- Authorised officers can isolate power supplies, make unsafe work safe, and open trenches for inspection\n- Police and emergency services can be delegated powers during emergencies\n- Warrants can be applied for by email\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis law keeps people safe from electrocution and house fires by ensuring only qualified, insured people do electrical work, and by creating a paper trail so faulty work can be traced and fixed.
