They apply Australia's *Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1987* to the US, but with major exceptions.\n\n**The limitation**\n\nThree specific sections of the Act (Parts III, V, and VI) **do not apply** to the United States. This means certain types of legal cooperation that Australia provides to other countries are excluded from the US arrangement.\n\n**Why it matters**\n\nThis creates a limited \"menu\" of mutual assistance between the two nations. While basic evidence sharing is available, anything falling under the excluded Parts cannot be requested or provided under this specific treaty framework.\n\n**Who it affects**\n\n- Police and prosecutors in Australia and the US\n- Defence lawyers seeking cross-border evidence\n- Anyone involved in criminal cases spanning both countries"}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations","history":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations/history","analysis":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/mutual-assistance-in-criminal-matters-united-states-of-america-regulations/documents"}}
