amount of mud crabs taken by licensees, or a\nstakeholder group, in 2 consecutive years decreases by at\nleast 10% each year; or\n(c) the total effort by licensees in 2 consecutive years increases\nby at least 10% each year; or\n(d) the median size of mud crabs taken by all fishers in\n2 consecutive years decreases by at least 5 mm each year; or\n(e) the total amount of by-product species taken by licensees in\nconsecutive years increases by at least 0.5 t; or\n(f) the total amount of by-catch species taken by licensees:\n(i) in a year increases by at least 50%; or\n(ii) in any 3 years increases by at least 100%; or\n(g) licensees, or officers or employees of Agencies and statutory\nauthorities, identify a significant effect of the fishery on an\necosystem component, particularly a It sets out what gear you can use, where you can fish, how big the crabs must be, and how many you can take.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n\n*   **Commercial fishers:** People with a Mud Crab Fishery licence (capped at 49 licences total). They must follow strict rules about boat use, pot numbers, holding cages, and processing.\n*   **Amateur fishers:** Recreational fishers who catch crabs by hand or with small numbers of pots for personal consumption.\n*   **The environment:** The Plan aims to protect crab populations, their habitats, and other species accidentally caught (by-catch).\n\n**Key rules:**\n\n*   **Size limits:** You cannot keep female mud crabs smaller than 150mm (commercial) or 140mm (amateur), or males smaller than 140mm (commercial) or 130mm (amateur) across the shell.\n*   **Protected crabs:** It is illegal to take female crabs carrying eggs (\"berried\" females).\n*   **Gear restrictions:** Commercial fishers can only use approved pots and holding cages with proper floats attached. Amateur fishers are limited to 5 pots and specific hand-catching methods.\n*   **Catch limits:** Amateur fishers can take maximum 10 crabs per day and possess maximum 10 crabs (with exceptions for fishing parties).\n*   **No-go zones:** Fishing is banned in certain rivers and creeks (listed in Schedule 1) and in non-tidal waters.\n*   **Commercial quotas:** Licences work on a \"unit of entitlement\" system—each licence comes with 2 units, and each unit allows 30 pots. Units can be temporarily transferred between licence holders.\n\n**Why it matters:**\n\nThe Plan tries to balance three competing interests: making sure there are enough crabs for future generations (sustainability), protecting the marine environment, and ensuring fair access between commercial operators, Indigenous fishers, and recreational anglers. It includes automatic review triggers—like if catch numbers drop by 50% in a year or crab sizes shrink—forcing the government to check if the rules are working."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006","history":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006/history","analysis":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/mud-crab-fishery-management-plan-2006/documents"}}
