This land is then re-granted to the City of Melbourne for general municipal purposes, allowing the Council to lease it out for up to 21 years.\n- **Fixes a street boundary issue**: It formally declares that a strip of land (Little Flinders Street) is a public street, resolving doubts about its status.\n- **Sets up park management**: It appoints the Melbourne City Council as the manager (\"committee of management\") for several significant parklands including:\n  - Treasury Gardens\n  - Land around the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (near Spring Street)\n  - Royal Park and surrounding areas\n  - Land around the Shrine of Remembrance\n- **Settles old financial obligations**: It cancels a $20,000 debt the government owed the Council from 1917, and releases the government from a 1929 agreement to pay $2,000 annually for Treasury Gardens maintenance.\n- **Protects the Crown**: It ensures the Victorian Government doesn't have to pay compensation for these land transfers and changes.\n\n**Who it affects:**\n- **City of Melbourne**: Gains control of valuable land and responsibility for maintaining major parks, but loses expected government payments.\n- **Public**: Ensures continued access to important green spaces like Treasury Gardens, Royal Park, and the Shrine precinct.\n- **Royal Australasian College of Surgeons**: Their lease arrangements are acknowledged and the government's obligation to maintain surrounding gardens is formalised.\n\n**Why it matters:**\nThis Act is essentially a massive property settlement between the Victorian Government and Melbourne City Council from the 1930s. It converted old market sites into usable municipal assets, locked in Council management of Melbourne's iconic parklands, and cleared up century-old land titles and financial obligations. It still governs who manages some of Melbourne's most visited public spaces today."}},"importantCases":[],"_links":{"self":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933","history":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933/history","analysis":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933/analysis","conflicts":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933/conflicts","importantCases":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933/important-cases","documents":"/api/acts/melbourne-market-and-park-lands-act-1933/documents"}}
